Business Models in Transition

From value creation towards value restoration

Society and the economy are in transition. To grasp this evolving process the concept of the Economy was introduced. In this second public lecture within the realm of the Chair Emile Francqui we investigate the impact on business models. It is common to consider these models as context specific actionable logics that enable the creation of value. But what is the contemporary meaning of value and value creation undergoing changes? What if this changes towards value maintenance and even value restauration? The impact of the transition framed through the concept of the WEconomy shows that a broader range of business models emerge that encapsulate values such as sustainable, circular, and inclusive. On the basis of these observations, a brief typology of business models addressing their role in value preservation and restoration is provided. The seminar concludes by introducing the concept of transactional means and the changing role they can play in designing business models, which will be the subject of the third and final lecture ion this series.
